As part of their Higher Education preparation paths, the St Helena Community College (SHCC) offers members of the community an opportunity to enrol for an Access to Higher Education Diploma.
The Access to Higher Education Diploma is a regulated UK qualification designed to prepare mature students for university study, while also being a valuable qualification in itself. It is a Level 3 qualification which gives people the knowledge and skills needed in a specific subject area. In the UK, an Access to Higher Education Diploma is equivalent to earning three A-levels.
The Access to Higher Education Diploma aims to:
- Prepare adults who do not have the necessary qualifications to enter university
- Offer a general introduction to study skills and key areas of knowledge within the subject(s) taken
- Help people to become independent, self-directed learners, and prepare them for the demands of undergraduate study
- Offer a positive and supportive learning experience where people can build their skills and confidence
Director of Education & Employment, Shirley Wahler, said:
“Access Diplomas provide a great way for working adults, with few formal qualifications, to gain a strong academic foundation in their field of choice. For a mature candidate, an Access Diploma offers the equivalent of three A-levels, but it can be earned in as little as one year. Working adults can easily study for an Access Diploma part-time.”
Each Access Course, offered via distance learning, allows you to choose from a range of study programmes. Full Access Courses are designed to take, on average, one academic year to complete. The Access to Higher Education Diploma requires 60 credits – 15 are ungraded and 45 are graded. The grades available are Pass, Merit, and Distinction.
An Access to Higher Education Diploma is recognised by the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS), a UK-based organisation whose main role is to operate the application process for British universities.
