St Helenian students currently studying in the UK had the opportunity to meet up in London on Saturday, 4 February 2017, in an event arranged by the St Helena Government UK Representative, Mrs Kedell Worboys MBE. (See photo attached).
The students – Robyn Sim, Lisa Joshua, Alexia Lawrence, Lee Yon, Rebecca Lawrence, Robyn Midwinter, Harley Williams, Louis Youde, Jordan Clingham, David Clarke, James Cairns-Wicks, and Kyle Shoesmith – were able to share experiences and views of London while enjoying time together.
One-to-one meetings were held with Kedell followed by a group link up with Prince Andrew School via Skype to speak with students who are considering the move to study in the UK.
Assistant Director of the Education & Employment Directorate, Wendy Benjamin, commented:
“Feedback from the students on the Island indicated that it was a positive experience. The get-together gave opportunity to discuss concerns about living and studying in the UK from the perspective of a student from St Helena. Experiences shared will be of great benefit to new students when embarking on their own scholarship programmes in the future. It was also really nice to see all of our students together in the same place at the one time.
“On behalf of the Education & Employment Directorate I would like to thank all those involved in making this event possible and giving their support to our students both here and in the UK.”
Prince Andrew School Head Teacher, Penny Bowers, added:
“I felt it was a useful and informative session and it was great to see everyone. I know that two students in particular appreciated the feedback as they are getting so close to leaving St Helena now, and a bit apprehensive about the move. I think they were reassured to know that help is at hand, and that it may not be as difficult as what they initially thought.”
In London, students stayed overnight at the Hampton by Hilton Hotel near Waterloo Station. They also had the opportunity to enjoy a dinner and cruise on the River Thames.
Most of the students took advantage of the big city and decided to try the Ministry of Sound experience. The evening was enjoyed by all with positive comments received.
