HEALTHY CHILDHOOD

The Health Promotion Team has been running Family Fun Nights across Island schools, focusing on the theme of being active together as a family.

Health Promotion Coordinator, Marian Yon, said:

“Healthy children turn into healthy adults.  The events have been going very well and schools and teachers have taken the lead in organising their own unique activities.”

Sessions in the schools include ‘Old School’ games such as skipping, hopscotch and hoops, along with penalty shootouts, karate and Zumba dancing.  Catering trainer Mike Harper has also been present to provide nutritious tasters and healthy recipe ideas.

The children themselves have also been hard at work, creating poems and posters around the subject – with prizes being given for the best displays.

St Paul’s Primary held its Fun Night on Tuesday 12 July 2016 (pictured), where there were displays on growing your own food (courtesy of ANRD), recommendations for daily activities for all ages, and information on the amount of sugar contained in soft drinks.

Parent, Michelle Thomas, said:

“I attended the event this afternoon to support my children in engaging in healthy activities, and also to interact with the school in my role as school liaison and youth engagement officer.”

At St Paul’s, activities included fitness circuits, Zumba, Salsa and activities where the children tried their hands at making healthy treats.
