COUNCILLORS DUNCAN AND WARD PEARCE TO ATTEND OVERSEAS CONFERENCE AND SEMINAR

 

Councillors Wilson Duncan and Pamela Ward Pearce (photos attached), will depart the Island on Monday 11 May 2015 to attend a conference in Cyprus and a seminar in Nicaragua, respectively.

Councillor Duncan will attend the 45th British Isles & Mediterranean Regional (BIMR) Conference in Limassol, Cyprus from 24-27 May 2015. The theme of the Conference is “Parliaments in the face of contemporary challenges” and it will explore current regional and global developments and stimulate open discussions on the relevant challenges and opportunities facing parliamentarians.

Plenary sessions for the Conference will focus on Parliaments and Unemployment and Parliaments and Accountability. Councillor Duncan will also have the opportunity to attend two out of the four workshops on Parliaments and Youth Unemployment, Parliamentary Scrutiny of Government Employment Policies, Broadcasting the Parliament: pros & cons and, the responsibilities for MPs regarding professional ethics.

Councillor Duncan commented:

This is the first time for me to attend a CPA conference and I welcome the opportunity to represent the CPA St Helena Branch.  I hope to positively contribute to the discussions in terms of sharing information about the challenges that are faced by Councillors on St Helena and to learn from other delegates about the challenges that their branches faces from both regional and global perspectives.”

Councillor Ward Pearce will represent St Helena at the Caribbean Regional Seminar in Managua, Nicaragua from 19-21 May 2015. The theme of the Seminar is ‘Implementation of the Third International Decade for the Eradication of Colonialism: the United Nations at 70: taking stock of the decolonisation agenda’.

During the Seminar Councillor Ward Pearce will be able to take part in discussions around the decolonisation of the Non-Self-Governing Territories within the framework of the Third International Decade for the Eradication of Colonialism, The role of the United Nations system in providing developmental assistance to Non-Self-Governing Territories in accordance with all relevant United Nations resolutions and The United Nations at 70: taking stock of the decolonisation agenda: recommendations on advancing the decolonisation process.

Councillor Ward Pearce commented:

“I feel honoured and privileged to represent St Helena at this Conference in Nicaragua and I go with the mandate of the full Council and am funded by the United Nations.

“This conference provides opportunities to explore increased levels of self- governance for St Helena, in tandem with an improved and sustainable economy that is envisaged following the opening of the Airport.”
