Pilling Primary School Teacher, Mavis (Meggy) Brooks, and Prince Andrew School Teacher, Phillip Francis, are the latest teachers to achieve the Cambridge International Certificate in Teaching and Learning.
All Cambridge Professional Development Qualifications at Certificate Award Level are placed on the Higher Education Qualifications Framework (HEQF) at Level 4. This means that the academic and skill demands are equivalent to a first year university standard. Despite this, both Meggy and Phillip studied for this award whilst working full-time in their respective schools.
Both teachers were supported on the course by Teacher Training Advisor and Programme Leader, Garry Cameron.
Meggy said:
“I am thrilled to have passed my Level 4 Teaching and Learning Certificate. It was not easy to study alongside a full-time teaching post but it goes to show that it can be done and you are never too old to learn or achieve your goals. I would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to Garry Cameron for his guidance and direction and to my colleagues for all their support.”
Phillip said:
“I am delighted to have achieved the Certificate Award. I would like to thank Garry Cameron for the additional taught sessions held at the end of the school day as they provided the boost and motivation to complete the assessment portfolio. Thanks also to Frazer Stone, Advisory Teacher at Prince Andrew School, for proof reading the portfolio prior to submission.”
Garry commented that the success of any programme at this level of study on St Helena depends on the advice, support and guidance provided by experienced practitioners who act as professional mentors.
Garry said:
“I would like to thank all the mentors who carried out observations, provided excellent written feedback, and had several professional discussions to enable participants to complete their assessment portfolios. Cambridge examiners observed that the participants are well supported by their mentors.
“Teachers achieving these awards are raising the quality of learning and teaching on the Island as well as raising standards of attainment and achievement for the children and young people on St Helena.”
