Alexia Lawrence of St Pauls has recently graduated having achieved a First Class Honours Bachelor of Science Degree in Biomedical Science at Kingston University London in the UK.
Alexia said:
“Overall, it has been an incredible experience. It was by no means easy, but I have thoroughly enjoyed my studies and am proud to be a Kingston University Graduate.”
The Biomedical Science Degree comprised of 16 modules assessed by a combination of assignments, presentations, and practical and written examinations. Alexia’s key areas of study included Molecular Biology, Medical Physiology, Infection and Immunity, Pathobiology, Clinical Chemistry, Haematology, Clinical Immunology and Medical Microbiology.
She commented:
“The Degree course was incredibly intense and challenging and required an immense amount of commitment and long periods of study.”
In her final year, Alexia studied specialist modules covering both the theoretical and practical aspects of the major branches of Biomedical Science. It included clinical case studies used to provide an understanding of biomedical techniques and their applications in clinical diagnosis, prognosis, and patient management, including drug interactions and the basis of individual variation in drug responsiveness.
The modules also covered integrating diagnostic procedures and the key role that laboratory investigations play in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases in areas such as renal disease, diabetes, anaemia, cancers and infectious diseases.
Alexia graduated on Thursday, 18 July 2019, having successfully achieved her Degree. Alexia was also awarded the prestigious Institute of Biomedical Sciences (IBMS) President’s Prize for outstanding achievement in a Biomedical Science Honours Degree. In addition, Alexia also received two Kingston University Dean’s prizes for consistent good performances and for the best performance on the degree.
She concluded:
““This course has been immensely challenging. It called for total commitment, diligence and sheer hard work which I was fully prepared to do. I am thrilled to have achieved my First Class Honours and consider it an absolute honour to be awarded the President’s prize for outstanding achievement as well as the two Dean’s prizes.
“I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Kingston University. The entire experience has enlightened, inspired, and enriched my knowledge immeasurably. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my tutors, for whom I have the deepest respect, my family, my partner, and the UK Reps Office in London, for their unerring support; and the St Helena Government for sponsoring my studies.
“For all our islanders, who aspire to achieving greater knowledge and understanding whether through academic study or work experience, you can do it. In the words of Milton Berle ‘If opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door’ and you will accomplish your goals.”
Alexia will now continue her training as she begins a work placement at South West London Pathology, working towards completion of the IBMS Registration Training Portfolio. This will allow Alexia to gain the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) Registration and return to the St Helena Health Directorate as a fully UK qualified and registered Biomedical Scientist.
