POLICE APPEAL FOR INFORMATION – THEFT OF ENDEMIC PLANTS AT MILLENNIUM FOREST

St Helena Police are currently investigating the theft of a number of plants stolen from the Millennium Forest Nursery between 4pm on Tuesday, 11, and 8.30am on Wednesday, 12 June 2019.

Conservation Projects Officer, Martina Peters, said:

“These plants have taken much valuable time to grow and be cared for, in order to become established. Some of the plants taken were intended for sale, so that profits from sales will be put back into undertaking conservation works at the Millennium Forest. This goes towards staff salaries, transport costs, material and equipment etc.

“Also stolen were a number of Ebony plants, the Ebony is endemic to St Helena Island and protected under the Environmental Protection Ordinance 2016 for which the maximum penalty is a fine of £50,000 or imprisonment for 12 months or both.”

If anyone has any information which may assist with this investigation, regardless of how minor it may seem, please contact Police Headquarters on tel: 22626 or email: cid@sainthelena.gov.sh.
