The monthly meeting of the Public Health Committee was held on Wednesday, 7 November 2018.
A warm welcome was given to new staff within the directorate – Radiographer Jasmine and the Patient Source Team, Damian and Chris, who are here to complete the installation of the new patient electronic record system.
The Chair confirmed his travel plans for the next Joint Ministerial Committee (JMC) meeting in December including a visit to patients undergoing treatment in Pretoria while en route. It was confirmed that Cllr Brian Isaac will deputise for the chair in his absence.
The Director of Health updated the committee on the revised three-year Strategic Plan for the health service. Once all plans are agreed and finalised, the committee agreed that a summary will be made available to the public at all health directorate sites in addition to the plan being available online.
An update on the Mental Health Section was presented by the team leader. The Committee noted the ongoing service review, the difficulty in recruiting additional staff, and the plan to widen mental health service to include community-based work for general mental health promotion and resilience.
The committee discussed the Medical Services Organisation (MSO) contract review report and agreed, with the finding, that MSO had met contractual obligations and contributed to cost reduction.
Finally, the Committee reviewed draft legislation on practitioner registration and agreed some changes. A discussion on the proposed review for tobacco legislation concluded that a special meeting will be convened in the near future to discuss this specific subject.
