NEW GCSE & LEVEL 2 COURSES AT THE ST HELENA COMMUNITY COLLEGE

As part of their wide range of offerings, the St Helena Community College (SHCC) has included a number of subjects at Level 2 and GCSE level in 2018/19. Learners can choose from a range of subjects, from the core English and Maths to exciting new subjects like Art & Design, Environmental Management, Marine Science, and Enterprise & Marketing. The new subjects in particular are attracting great interest from the community.

Director of Education & Employment, Shirley Wahler, said:

“We encourage anyone interested in learning about a new subject, or just in getting important skills in core subjects, to register for our Level 2/GCSE courses. We are particularly pleased with the support we are getting for our Environmental Management and Marine Science courses, where the National Trust has offered to provide support. We also strongly encourage anyone interested in business, including current or future business owners, to consider the Enterprise & Marketing course. Like a number of these Level 2 courses, Enterprise & Marketing is a very practical course that offers learners real-world skills.”

A General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) is an academically rigorous, internationally recognised qualification, awarded in a specific subject. The qualification is equivalent to Level 1 or Level 2, depending on the grade earned. Although typically taken at the age of 16, GCSE examinations can be taken at any age.

GCSE, or equivalent qualifications in English and Maths, are often required by employers or for further study and higher qualifications. If you plan to undertake A-Levels, higher level professional courses, or university studies, GCSE qualifications are often either recommended or required. In particular, many qualifications will assume that you have skills in English at least at the level of GCSE. Other courses, particularly those with a technical or scientific component, may require a GCSE in Mathematics.

GCSE courses normally run for one school year to prepare you to sit the external examination, usually offered in June or November. Some students may find that they require more than one year of study to prepare successfully for the GCSE examination.

GCSE English and GCSE Maths are fully subsidised by SHG as part of the Core Skills initiative, allowing learners to study at no cost. Other GCSE courses can be registered for at a cost of £20.
