NEW DENTAL OFFICER FOR ST HELENA

New Dental Officer, Heather Cowdry, recently arrived on St Helena to take up her new role within the Health Directorate.

Heather has been appointed on a two-year contract and her main duties are to provide general dental care to the residents of St Helena, including continuing with the school Screening Programme. On a day-to-day basis, Heather will conduct check-ups and dental fitness examinations, emergency care, fillings, root canal treatment, extractions, treatment for gum disease and will work together with the Dental Lab Technician to provide dentures.

Heather commented:

“I’ve been on St Helena for nearly two weeks and so far I love it. The team in the Dental Clinic are so friendly and helpful and have made me feel really welcome. I hope that while I’m here, I will be able to provide the best possible treatment to the patients that I see.”

Director of Health, Dr Akeem Ali, added:

“Heather joins us as an experienced Dentist who has worked with small populations in rural setting. We are excited to have her on board because she is able to deploy wide-ranging skills in dental care and oral health hygiene promotion on St Helena.”

Heather trained at King’s College London and graduated in 2008. Heather spent a year working in a Special Needs Clinic in Aylesbury and thereafter a year working in Cardiff Dental Hospital as part of their Oral Surgery and Restorative team before returning to Hampshire where she worked in a Mobile Dental Clinic.
