‘YOU SAID, WE DID’
As part of their Neighbourhood Policing programme, St Helena Police have been consulting with communities across the Island. A series of meetings and surgeries were well attended, and a vast range of subjects discussed in March 2017.
Concerns raised in various districts include:
Blue Hill
Concerns were raised about dogs chasing vehicles, trespassing and wandering in public places
The situation has been monitored and it would appear that this is an Island-wide issue. A new campaign –Your Dog and the Law – has been launched with a view to educating dog owners on their responsibilities.
Half Tree Hollow & White Gate
The community raised concerns about vehicles speeding in these areas, especially during the hours of darkness
The ‘Speed Kills’ Campaign 2017 was launched on Friday 31 March and will run until Friday, 28 April 2017. The aim of the campaign is to educate drivers, deter speeders, and prosecute offenders. Any member of the public with concerns about speeding is asked to please contact the police with your information.
Sandy Bay
Residents suggested having some plants or shrubbery in the beach area to make it more pleasant looking and less barren
The relevant agencies will be contacted to see if planting can be arranged.
Concerns were raised about the amount of rubbish in the Bamboo Grove Area
Litter bins have been provided and the relevant agencies have been spoken to with a view to having appropriate signage in place.
Jamestown
There were concerns with parking issues at Maldivia, where people are parking on private property and also the hospital area is becoming more and more congested
Work has started in gathering ideas as to how this can be resolved, further work will continue to try and find a solution to this concern
Briars
There were concerns of vehicles speeding through the Briars
Police spoke to the persons involved and advice has been given at this time. All other reports of this nature will be investigated further. A speed campaign has also started where officers will be concentrating their efforts on this problem.
Alarm Forest
Residents raised the need for further street lighting in the Alarm Forest area
Some street lighting is in place, a request for further lighting has been referred to the relevant agency.
There are still some concerns being addressed and once completed the community will be informed.
