Councillors Derek Thomas and Kylie Hercules are currently attending the week-long 63rd Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC) in Dhaka, Bangladesh, which began on 1 November 2017.
Councillor Thomas reports that the official opening of the CPC was held on Thursday with on-stage local entertainment. This was followed by official welcoming speeches from the Chairperson, Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury MP, Speaker of Bangladesh, Secretary- General, Mr Akbar Khan and Small Branches Chairperson, Hon. Anglu Farrugia MP, Speaker of the Parliament of Malta. The official group photograph was then taken, followed by the first item for discussion – a Strategic Road Map for Small Branches to Assist in Capacity Building. St Helena should stand to benefit from this agreed Strategy.
Today saw the continuation of the Small Branches Conference and the commencement of the Executive Committee. Business for discussion was the adoption of the Agenda, Duties & Responsibilities of Executive Committee Trustees, Acceptance and Actions from the last meeting held in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia in April 2017, Composition of Subcommittees, Review & Planning and Finance.
Councillor Thomas formed part of the Review & Planning Subcommittee and is pleased to report that St Helena’s request under Technical Support Funding for funding of £25, 432 was recommended for approval in order to purchase IT equipment, and associated essential equipment for the Council Chamber on St Helena.
Councillor Kylie Hercules’ day continued with the Small Branches discussion.
