SHG is pleased to announce that, with the support of a £20,000 donation from the St Helena Cancer Support & Awareness Charity, and another expected donation from the St Helena League of Friends, a Mammogram machine has been procured for the St Helena General Hospital.
The Siemens Analogue Mammography Unit, valued at £60,000, is the first machine of this type to be used on the Island, and is an important step towards improving preventative and proactive healthcare on St Helena.
Mammography is a specific type of breast imaging that uses low-dose x-rays to detect cancer early – before women experience symptoms when it is most treatable. While Mammograms do not prevent breast cancer, they can save lives by finding breast cancer as early as possible. When caught early, localised cancers can be removed without resorting to breast removal (mastectomy).
Director of Health, Darren Clarke, said:
“Having a Mammography machine in the Hospital will bring many benefits by enabling early detection of breast cancer on St Helena. It will help us optimise examination times and assist with obtaining a timely diagnosis.”
SHG continues its commitment to improving healthcare provision on St Helena.
