COMMUNITY CINEMA

SHG’s Safeguarding Children Board has recently sponsored a ‘Community Cinema’ initiative – which begins on Sunday 12 June 2016 at the Guinea Grass Community Centre, organised by the St Helena National Trust.

Director of the St Helena National Trust, Jeremy Harris, said:

“The initial idea was to put together a regular ‘cinema experience’, particularly aimed towards young people on St Helena, to provide them with another activity to look forward to at weekends.

“We approached the Safeguarding Children Board last year with the idea of running this regularly at Millennium Forest and were thrilled when they offered their financial support.

“As we looked in more detail at the practicalities, it became evident that a ‘pop-up’ cinema would be a better solution – that way we could run showings at various venues around the Island and put any monies raised towards good causes that we will advertise.

“Our event at the Guinea Grass Community Centre this weekend is a trial for the idea and any monies raised will go to work at the Millennium Forest, since that was the initial idea.”

Acting Chairperson of the Safeguarding Children Board, Paul McGinnety, added:

“The Safeguarding Children Board is committed to ensuring children and young people are safe and are able to participate in positive activities.

“The Board ran a successful grant scheme last year which led to over 35 successful projects receiving funding across the community for children and young people and it is fabulous to team up with the St Helena National Trust to let children and young people enjoy the big screen.”

The first films to be shown by the Community Cinema at Guinea Grass this Sunday are, ‘Gnomeo and Juliet’ starting at 3pm and ‘Here Comes the Boom’ at 7pm.
