Presenting the awards were Councillors Dr Corinda Essex, Nigel Dollery, Director of Education Shirley Wahler, Construction Trainer David Goodrick, Work Development Coordinator Cynthia Bennett and NVQ Internal Quality Assurer (IQA) Karen Yon.
Awards were presented to adult recipients in Functional Skills in Mathematics & English, GCSE English, ICT & Statistics, IGCSE Accounting, Travel & Tourism, Edexcel in Human Biology, 17th Edition Electrical, and Diplomas in Professional Cookery and Food & Beverage. Other awards included certificates in Environmental Conservation, Customer Services and Business & Administration. An Assessor Award was presented and recognition was also given for individuals on completion of their Apprenticeships.
Director of Education Shirley Wahler, welcomed all to the presentation and said:
“Today is an opportunity to really celebrate your hard work and your willingness to take part. Your achievement really began when you decided to take on a challenge – because if you have been out of the classroom for a while it takes time to prove yourself again. Success does not rely on dreams, success is about having the aspiration to work hard and to make that aspiration a reality.
“I want to take this opportunity to thank all the educators who have helped you along the way to your achievement.”
Assistant Director Kerry Yon praised student Tysha Anthony, who studied on her own accord and received an Edexcel in Human Biology. The efforts of the IGCSE Accounting students were also remarked upon, and the support given by both Solomon & Company and tutor Jenney Corker were recognised in this context. Thanks were also given to Enterprise St Helena for funding the Travel & Tourism award.
Following the presentation of awards, Jenny Corker (pictured with her students) was honoured for over a decade working as an NVQ Assessor and Internal Quality Assurer and was wished well for her retirement. Karen Yon, remarked on Jenny’s excellent standards, and enthusiasm for delivering the Business & Administration and Customer Service courses to candidates.
