The Education & Employment Directorate is pleased to announce that Penelope Bowers, currently the Acting Headteacher of Prince Andrew School (PAS), has been appointed to the substantive post of Headteacher of the School, with effect from Wednesday 1 June 2016.

Penelope assumed the role of Acting Headteacher in January this year following the departure of Paul Starkie. She is a longstanding member of PAS and has served as a senior staff member for eleven years. Last year, she undertook leadership training in the UK, commenced the National Professional Qualification for Headship course (the UK standard for school leadership) and engaged in a series of exposure visits to high performing schools.

Penelope said of her appointment:

“I am both proud and delighted to be given this opportunity as Headteacher of Prince Andrew School. There are many challenges to overcome in our ongoing journey to raising educational standards here on St Helena, but I am positive that with the support of the excellent staffing team here at Prince Andrew – and our students – together we can make Prince Andrew School a beacon within our community.”

Director of Education & Employment, Shirley Wahler, expressed her pleasure at the appointment:

“Penelope has taken advantage of every opportunity to extend her professional knowledge and to build her leadership skills. She has a wealth of experience within Prince Andrew School and a deep commitment to the future of St Helena.

“She has demonstrated a clear vision for improving the School and I have every confidence that, under her leadership, Prince Andrew School will further progress and prosper.”

Governor Lisa Phillips offered:

“A huge congratulations to Penny on her appointment. In my Inauguration Speech I said I wanted to see more Saints developing and moving into TC roles. Penny is the first of what I hope will be many.”
