POLICE LAUNCH DRINK-DRIVE CAMPAIGN

The St Helena Police Service will from tomorrow, Thursday 1 December 2016, launch their annual ‘Drink-Drive Campaign’. This year the campaign is called ‘Don’t Get Smashed This Christmas’ – it will run until Sunday 8 January 2017.

The aim of this campaign is to educate drivers and the public on the dangers and consequences of drink-driving, and to help increase their knowledge on how drinking can affect them.

Police will be carrying out stop checks with the vehicle inspector, roadside breath tests and speed checks. Officers will deal with all motoring offences appropriately, in accordance to their campaign objectives.

Acting Police Sergeant, Michelle Thomas, said:

“Remember, the legal limit for driving with alcohol on your breath is 50mg per 100ml, however, consideration is being given to have it reduced to 35mg per 100ml, so watch what you drink and think before you drive!

“By exceeding the limit, you are not just putting your life at risk, but also the lives of other road users, whether they are drivers, passengers or pedestrians.”

This year, the Police are working in conjunction with late night taxi service providers – the recently launched V2 Taxi partners, who are available 24/7, and Joshua’s taxis, who provide a public transport system. However, other late night taxi providers include Brian Phillips, Reginald Furniss, Jeffrey Youde, and Patrick Crowie (Noble). These taxis have informed the Police that they will be available, and people should call them if needed.

Acting Sergeant Thomas continued:

“By using a taxi, you take away the risk of drink-driving and keep yourself and others safe. By doing this you also keep your licence safe.

“If there are other taxi providers who will provide this service, please put yourselves out there for the public to be aware of.”

Chief of Police Trevor Botting concluded:

There is a clear link between drink-driving and road collisions. My Officers and I want everyone to enjoy the festive season on St Helena so please think about what you are drinking before you drive and make other arrangements to get you home safely. Let’s have a fun but safe Christmas on St Helena.”

Please be advised that all drivers stopped by the police will be breath tested, so again, THINK BEFORE YOU DRINK.
