HORSE POINT LANDFILL SITE

EXTENSION TO OPENING TIMES

With effect from Monday 30 November 2015 and until further notice, the Horse Point Landfill Site (HPLS) will operate under extended opening and closing times as follows:

  • Monday to Sunday, open from 9am to 3pm

The site will be closed on Public Holidays.

On Mondays to Fridays, HPLS will be accessible via both the public and commercial entrances, as signposted.

On Saturdays and Sundays, HPLS will only be accessible via the public entrance. Access to the main site via the barrier at the Public Recycling Facility may be provided by the Landfill Operator, depending on the type of waste to be disposed of.

Site users are requested to kindly follow instructions given by the Landfill Operator.

Environmental Risk Manager, Mike Durnford, said:

“It is imperative that Horse Point Landfill Site is managed to the highest standards of health and safety. The site boasts facilities for the incineration of waste, for hazardous waste storage and disposal, other waste management operations and excavations up to 12m deep. It is therefore not safe for the public when unmanned.

“Our aim is to provide customers with a safe environment for waste recycling and disposal with the minimum environmental impact on St Helena. It was necessary initially to implement Monday to Saturday opening, before a solution was found to facilitate opening seven days a week.

“The free ‘bulky waste collection service’ has also been introduced to assist the public to dispose of their bulky waste appropriately and to contribute towards a cleaner and greener St Helena. To date, the service has been very well subscribed to and I encourage the public to maximise the use of this service.

“It is hoped that the introduction of seven days a week opening, coupled with the free bulky waste collection service, will negate the need for fly tipping outside of the landfill site that we have recently and unfortunately seen.”
