Day Of The Seafarer 2020

On Thursday, 25 June 2020, the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and member states, will be celebrating the Day of the Seafarer, with the theme ‘Seafarers are Key Workers: Essential to Shipping, Essential to the World’.

The theme has been dictated by the COVID-19 pandemic, recognising that Seafarers are on the frontline, playing an essential role in maintaining the flow of vital goods, such as food, medicines and medical supplies.

To recognise and celebrate the day, a small ceremony is scheduled to be held at Rupert’s while the MV Helena is in port. This will be to give thanks to the Captain and crew of the vessel and to extend wider thanks to the many seafarers both on-Island and worldwide.

Due to restricted access in Rupert’s, the ceremony will be for invited guests only. Despite this, members of the public are encouraged to give thanks, to the seafaring community, past and present, in their own way on this day.
