DOMESTIC ABUSE – ZERO TOLERANCE

MESSAGE FROM ST HELENA POLICE AND SAFEGUARDING

The St Helena Police and Safeguarding Directorates would like to stress to the public the serious consequences of domestic abuse and encourages any victim, male or female, to come forward and make a report. Domestic abuse will not be tolerated on St Helena.

Head of Investigations, DCI Michael Luke, said:

“It takes immense courage for victims of domestic violence to report matters to the Police in the first instance.

“Working with our partners, we constantly look to encourage and support victims to report any incidents of domestic abuse as it is vitally important that they are listened to and believed. Domestic abuse, in any form, is not acceptable in modern society.

“Philip Yon was yesterday, 10 May 2018, sentenced to a total of 12 months imprisonment for an assault on his partner, an assault on another man and for assaulting a Police Officer.

“I hope this case sends a clear message to victims of domestic abuse that the St Helena Police Directorate takes any report very seriously and will take positive action when cases are reported. I would urge anyone who has experienced any form of domestic abuse to come forward and report it to us.”

The Safe Haven Service of the Safeguarding Directorate concluded:

“We, as a domestic abuse support service, wish to advise any members of the community, male or female, in circumstances such as this to access and engage with our services.

“It has often been the case on-Island that domestic abuse goes unreported, for many different reasons. But the Safe Haven Service is here to offer help when domestic abuse survivors wish to take the next step forward in receiving support.

“If there is anyone who is suffering from domestic abuse and seeks help, please contact the Safe Haven staff on 23312, and please remember that domestic abuse should not be swept under the carpet, or accepted as a part of your life.”
