The Agriculture & Natural Resources Division (ANRD) was expecting their first consignment of 1,000 day old chicks, Dekalb-Amberlink layers, on Saturday, 1 September 2018.
The eggs were incubated specially for the Island as the hatchery would not normally hatch on a Friday for a weekend delivery.
International regulations permit day old chicks to be flown around the world for 72 hours from hatching, after which flying is not possible. Unfortunately, the flight had to be postponed due to unfavourable weather conditions.
The chicks had no other destination and this small number could not be absorbed by local poultry units. Therefore, the difficult decision was made to humanely destroy them.
There is a shortage of laying hens on the Island, and this was to be the first of several consignments. A new order for chicks has been placed. ANRD are awaiting confirmation on the arrival of the chicks and will keep the public informed of any future developments.
