St Helena Government is today pleased to announce that Susan O’Bey (see photo attached) has been appointed to succeed Roy Burke as Chief Secretary when Roy leaves the Island at the end of his contract.
Susan has recently returned to SHG following a period of secondment to Enterprise St Helena, and is currently working on the Organisational Development & Transformation project. She will continue to lead on this work and the Future Leaders Programme for the rest of this year while preparing to take over as Chief Secretary.
Susan’s appointment comes after an open competition for the post within SHG and an extensive assessment process including a psychological assessment, presentation and in-depth interview, all undertaken in conjunction with the UK Occupational Psychology Centre. Susan is expected to take up the job full time in mid-2018, and until then will be supporting the substantive Chief Secretary in delivering SHG’s programme of work.
Speaking on her appointment, Susan said:
“I am very happy, this is a position that I have been working towards for the last few years and I have tailored my personal development to ensure that I have gained a wider experience and perspective which will help me to be effective when I take on the role next year. In the meantime I am looking forward to working with the current Chief Secretary over the coming months.”
Her Excellency, Governor Lisa Phillips, said:
“I congratulate Susan on this historic appointment for St Helena. We are on course for the first substantive St Helenian Chief Secretary – another St Helenian in a top job. I hope this appointment will be an inspiration for St Helenians, especially young people, and will demonstrate that with hard work can come success at the highest levels. I am proud to be the Governor at this very important time for the Island’s future.”
Chief Secretary, Roy Burke, concluded:
“I am truly delighted for Susan. I know she will be an excellent Chief Secretary and we will work together now to make sure that all is in place for her to take up her post next year. I would like to thank all the candidates for their considerable efforts. The competition was tough and Susan was a worthy winner.”
