The public is advised that from Friday, 29 September 2017, Horse Point Landfill Site will be open to the public seven days a week, 24 hours a day, including all Public Holidays.

This follows Waste Management Services having received several requests from the public, including via the St Helena Police Beat Surgeries for the opening hours to be extended.

The revised opening hours will initially be for a three month trial period, endorsed by the Environment & Natural Resources Committee (ENRC). During this time, Environmental Risk Manager, Mike Durnford, and Landfill Manager, Patrick Crowie, will visit the site outside of normal working hours to monitor public use.

Mike said:

“Patrick and I have worked diligently to bring about this much needed change, striking a balance between public risk and public demand. It is considered that with appropriate onsite signage to deter access to restricted areas like the domestic and hazardous waste cells, the public can safely use waste management facilities at Horse Point Landfill Site without the need for staffing the site outside of normal working hours. I would however advise caution against using the site during the hours of darkness because of the obvious hazards that exist.”

It is in the public’s interest to use the site appropriately during this period. Any negative impacts will be reported back to the ENRC preceding any decision to make the new opening times permanent.

The public is reminded to recycle as much of their waste as possible in the Public Recycling Facility prior to disposing in the bulky waste cell.
