A Major Incident Exercise took place yesterday, Wednesday 12 April 2017, to test the Island’s Emergency Services’ response and also to examine how the wider resources from across SHG can be mobilised to support first responders.
The scenario involved two mini buses and a car colliding on the Haul Road above Rupert’s. Over 20 people were involved in the accident.
Acting Chief of Police, Steve Riley, said:
“The exercise tested the ability of the Emergency Services along with support elements from SHG’s ability to deal with a significant road traffic collision which involved fatalities.
“As the scenario unfolded, a casualty was located half way down a ravine. Officers from the St Helena Fire & Rescue Service, the Airport Rescue & 
Firefighting Service and the Rock Guards were involved in a rope rescue of the injured person. This is a new capability following training on-Island in September last year.
“My initial impressions are that aims of the exercise were met. We simultaneously tested the Hospital and the major incident plans and have learnt a great deal. Over the next week, a series of de-briefs will be held where we will take that learning and use to refine our response to any future incidents.
“I would like to thank Basil Read for the their co-operation in allowing us to use the Haul Road, the Salvation Army for their assistance with welfare on the day, the volunteers who role-played and the media who added even more authenticity to the exercise.”
