SEA RESCUE SERVICE ISSUES SAFETY PRECAUTIONS TO FISHERMEN
Maundy Thursday falls this year on 13 April. As per tradition, many members of the public will spend the night fishing at various locations around the coast of St Helena.
The Sea Rescue Service reminds the public of the following safety equipment to pack for any planned fishing trips:
- VHF Radio
- Lifejacket
- Any prescription medication
- Suitable clothing for the weather conditions including, if possible, some Hi-Vis
- First Aid Kit
- Adequate lighting
Throughout the night the Sea Rescue Service will be patrolling the fishing spots around the Island. If any assistance is required they will be monitoring VHF Channel 16. The Sea Rescue Service can be signalled by a flashing or waving light and, as usual, will still be contactable via telephone number 999.
Fishermen are encouraged to inform a family member or friend of their intended fishing location and their expected time of return. It is not recommended that anybody fish alone.
The following tides are expected during Maundy Thursday and Good Friday:
(Maundy Thurs) Spring Tide – High tide: 16:15hrs – 0.86m
Low tide: 22:30hrs – 0.10m
(Good Fri) Spring Tide – High tide: 04:30hrs – 0.82m
Low tide: 10:30hrs – 0.11m
The weather forecast for Maundy Thursday will also be posted at the main landing steps at the lower Wharf.
The Sea Rescue Service would like to wish everyone a happy and safe Easter.
