Councillor Derek Thomas will depart St Helena on Tuesday, 18 April 2017, to attend the Mid-Year Meeting of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Executive Committee in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia from 24-28 April 2017. Councillor Thomas will be travelling onboard the MV Plancius to Ascension Island before flying to the UK and onward to Australia.
As a member of the CPA Executive Committee, Councillor Thomas will be representing the British Isles & Mediterranean Region along with other members of that region which includes St Helena.
Councillor Thomas will have a busy schedule and will attend a range of committee and sub-committee meetings as well as take part in a number of receptions hosted by high-profile members of the CPA.
Councillor Thomas said:
“I look forward to attending the Mid-Year Meeting, the outcome of which will be made known to the general public. This is a great opportunity to contribute to formulating CPA policies and strategies from which St Helena will stand to benefit.”
On Tuesday, 25 April, Councillor Thomas can partake in ANZAC day. A day when Australians and New Zealanders gather to commemorate the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps – they were the body of volunteer soldiers who travelled to Europe to contribute to the defence of the Commonwealth in World War One.
Following the five-day programme, Councillor Thomas will return via Cape Town, arriving at St Helena on or about 9 May 2017. He will be accompanied on this trip by his wife Linda.
