Senior Prison Officer, Marianne Phillips, and Prison Officer, Ricardo Morana, departed St Helena on Sunday, 10 March 2019, to participate in the Overseas Territories (OTs) Mental Health Awareness Programme in the UK with eight other OT representatives.
As part of this programme, Marianne and Ricardo will undergo a week’s placement in a UK prison from 12 to 16 March. Marianne’s placement is at HMP Swinfen Hall and Ricardo will be at HMP Warren Hill.
Following this placement, both officers will spend a week at the Prison Service College Newbold from 18 to 22 March 2019. Marianne and Ricardo will study five modules:
- Understanding Mental Health and Wellbeing
- Understanding Mental Ill Health
- Supporting Prisoners with Mental Ill Health
- Developing a supportive and enabling environment
- Mindfulness
The sessions will be made as interactive as possible and group work will be encouraged.
When they return to St Helena, both Marianne and Ricardo will share their learning with Prison colleagues, and will use their new skills to deal with those in Prison care who may have mental health issues.
St Helena Prison Manager, Heidi Murray, said:

This training is funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) as part of the Conflict, Stability & Security Fund’s (CSSF) Prisons Project under the Overseas Territories Justice, Security & Governance Programme.
