Team St Helena, who will be competing in the 2017 NatWest Island Games in Gotland, just outside of Sweden, left the Island on-board the RMS St Helena today, Tuesday, 6 June 2017.
An eight-strong team of Chef de Mission, Damien O’Bey, two team managers, and five competitors will travel via Cape Town, Dubai, and Stockholm, to arrive in Gotland on 21 June, in time for the opening ceremony. They will meet with another team manager and three more competitors travelling from the UK before the start of the Games.
This year, St Helena will be represented in Athletics, Swimming, Shooting and Golf.
Chairman of the National Amateur Sports Association St Helena, Nick Stevens, said:
“The athletes need to be the best that they can be by the time their event starts. After their events finish, if they know they were on top form, that they gave it their all and their best, then they will be satisfied with that. If they get a medal along the way, then that’ll be the icing on the cake.”
The Games will run for seven days from 24-30 June and the team is expected to return to St Helena on Sunday, 9 July 2017.
