SAME-SEX MARRIAGE APPLICATION – PRELIMINARY HEARING
A St Helenian made an application to the Registrar to get married to his same-sex partner here on the Island.
The Registrar referred this to the Court and yesterday at a preliminary hearing the Chief Justice noted that he was aware that there are strongly held views about this issue on St Helena and that the case was of considerable importance.
The Chief Justice decided that each party should be given the chance to be represented by counsel through legal aid and that their legal arguments should be provided to the court. He allowed the Equality & Human Rights Commission to be a party.
All the legal arguments must be received by July 2017. After that the Chief Justice will set a date for the case to be heard.
