St Helena Government is today starting the process to identify its next Chief Secretary. It is intended to seek a candidate from existing SHG staff and the advert will therefore be restricted to those currently working in SHG, including ESH. The successful applicant for the post will in future become the first permanently appointed Chief Secretary for SHG.
This challenging and pivotal position is aimed at inspiring and aspiring leaders who want to play an important part in contributing to shaping the future of St Helena. Ideal candidates for the post will be able to motivate, lead and manage the Public Service.
Substantive Chief Secretary Roy Burke said:
“Succession planning has been a key policy for SHG over the past three years. I have always said that I would like to be able to hand over to a local person when I leave. This recruitment further demonstrates our commitment to that process, adding to a growing number of local people taking up key roles in Government.
“We have deliberately designed the recruitment process to include support for the incoming job holder to ensure that every possible avenue of support is provided. I am very much looking forward to learning with the new job holder and working with the successful candidate over the coming months.”
The Chief Secretary (Designate) will work alongside the substantive Chief Secretary with responsibilities for assisting with leading and managing the performance of the public service.
A primary purpose of recruiting for a Chief Secretary (Designate) is to prepare the future Chief Secretary, through a training and development programme, to assume the substantive role in May 2018. They will then have line management responsibilities for all Directors apart from the Chief of Police and Chief Auditor who are directly responsible to the Governor.
Successful applicants for the post will be educated to UK Honours degree level or equivalent or have a post-graduate degree in Public Administration, Public Policy, Leadership & Management or equivalent, have significant experience of resource management in an organisation with a large staffing complement, significant leadership experience in a complex organisation and strong influencing and engagement skills.
