The Roads Section, supported by Crowley’s Electrical Services (C.E.S), has recently successfully installed 100 new solar lights to replace the old solar street lights around the Island and to add additional lights in places where none existed before.
These new solar lights have been installed as they are more efficient than the old units. The advantages of these new lights are that they are self-contained, and as they use LED technology, they have a longer life span. Solar lights are energy efficient as they are not reliant on fossil fuels and do not have on-going energy costs. They are designed to reduce light pollution as they brighten up only when they detect movement.
Roads Inspector, Darren Francis, said:
“It took about four months for C.E.S to install the solar lights, as most existing poles had to be modified to suit the clamp diameter. We will have a programme to maintain and upkeep the lights.”
The replacement of solar lights has been funded under the Roads 1 Project.
