CHARTERED ENGINEER ARRIVES

Arriving on Island recently was Chartered Engineer, Paul Brough (photo attached). Paul is contracted by SHG for three years and is based at Essex House working closely with the Technical Service team within the Environment and Natural Resources Directorate.Paul Brough

A Civil Engineer by profession, specialising in Roads and Bridges, Paul’s job is primarily to oversee technical and engineer services within SHG, providing engineering advice and detailed designs to all SHG directorates as well as reviewing 3rd party design applications.

Paul explained:

“There are a significant number of capital and operational schemes to be delivered, largely, but not solely, in conjunction with the Airport development. I will hopefully be helping to improve the understanding of the service that Technical Services can provide, reviewing the scopes, design criteria and producing/approving workable/economic designs for construction. I will also be advising on standards and compliance to ensure that the current developments are sustainable and maintainable long into the future.”

Paul has worked for 10 years in Local Authority, as a Bridge Engineer in Cork, Ireland, a Designers Site Representative in the North West of England and for the last four years in Dover Kent, working for the Harbour Board looking after infrastructure, dealing with asset management, inspection and maintenance.

Paul studied at the Royal Military College of Science, near Swindon to attain a degree in Civil Engineering, subsequently becoming Chartered whilst working in Ireland. Paul explained:

“I mainly undertook on-the-job training and hands on experience under an approved training scheme with my employer. The Institute awarding Charterership status has a number of criteria which you have to meet in terms of experience and training, ensuring you further your development at a professional level which in turn helps you to build your skill sets.”

Upon reaching a certain standard Paul produced a detailed experience and a specific project report, providing peer references prior to sitting examinations and going through an interview process with other independent engineers.
