‘A CONNECTED COMMONWEALTH’
St Helena will celebrate Commonwealth Day 2019 with a special ceremony at St Helena Airport on Monday, 11 March. The theme for this year’s Commonwealth Day is ‘A Connected Commonwealth’.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the formation of the modern Commonwealth. The theme ‘A Connected Commonwealth’, reflects the opportunities that the Commonwealth offers for people, organisations and governments to work together in cooperation and goodwill at many levels.
Events on St Helena will begin with a welcome speech at 9.45am by Councillor Kylie Hercules. This will be followed with messages read on behalf of Her Majesty, The Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, by Her Excellency Governor Lisa Honan, and also on behalf of the Right Honourable, Patricia Scotland QC, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth of Nations, by a student from Prince Andre w School.
Presentations on the day will be given from different organisations including the South Atlantic Environmental Research Institute (SAERI), SHG’s Corporate IT Section, and the National Sports Association of St Helena (NSASH).
The ceremony will be open to members of the public who are welcome to attend.
‘Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth’
As part of the Commonwealth Day celebrations, St Helena will once again ‘Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth’, joining other Commonwealth Nations around the world by raising the Commonwealth Flag at 10am in a shared celebration of this amazing family of nations that encompasses the globe.
The ‘Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth’ initiative, now in its fifth year, aims to catch the imagination of thousands of participants from all walks of life, inspiring them to join with others throughout the Commonwealth. As a collective public expression of commitment to the Commonwealth, it enables participants to show appreciation for the values the Commonwealth upholds, and the opportunities offered for friendship and cooperation with fellow Commonwealth citizens of all ages around the world.
Invited guests will be able to discuss the Commonwealth during a refreshment break and it is planned for the ceremony to end with the forming of a human ‘70’ to symbolise the 70th anniversary of the modern Commonwealth.
