Lee Yon from Half Tree Hollow has recently returned to St Helena following four years of study in the Electrical & Electronic Engineering industry in the UK.
Lee achieved a ‘Distinction’ throughout all of the following courses:
- BTEC Level 3 Electrical & Electronic Engineering
- City &Guilds Level 2 Electrical Installation
- City &Guilds Level 3 2365 Electrical Installation
- HND BTEC Level 5 Electrical & Electronic Engineering
The qualifications gained will allow Lee to undertake his new role as IT Technician within Corporate IT, helping to improve the operating standards and efficiency of the IT Section.
IT Section Manager, Jeremy Roberts, said:
“It’s an absolute pleasure having Lee back with us after such a long time away from the Island. The HND Electronic Engineering qualification, which Lee has since achieved, will provide him with the skills, knowledge and confidence to become a professional engineer.
“The qualifications and range of engineering elements that Lee obtained during the four-year course certainly meets the needs of today’s demanding engineering sector. Successful completion of the HND programme of study has also provided Lee with a pathway to top-up the HND qualification to a full honours degree.
“From an operational and an Island perspective, it is imperative that our local staff are in receipt of the necessary qualifications, allowing them to compete with their international counterparts.”
Lee will take on the duties of the Senior Technician, Colin Thomas, who helped mentor, prepare, and guide Lee for his new position.
Lee said:
“The BTEC was relatively easy, with the more challenging aspects being software related. I was ecstatic when I managed to design and build a two-zone alarm system. I decided to challenge myself with extra City & Guilds courses during this period, which allowed a more practical approach and understanding to the industry, through vocational studies.
“The HND proved more difficult, as a more in-depth understanding was needed. The course helped develop the managerial and professional management skill set I was lacking. I also struggled with the mathematics, so I dedicated free periods to understanding and revising math. Badminton training helped to reduce the tediousness of studying.”
Lee started within Corporate IT in September 2010 as an Assistant Technician. This helped Lee to build the basic skill set needed to understand the duties and day-to-day operations of the Senior Technician role.
Lee concluded:
“The team both here on-Island and in the UK showed constant support which helped to keep me motivated throughout. Mr Brian Fredericks went above and beyond to make sure I was satisfied with the terms and conditions and helped to resolve complex issues with admin and enrolment. He kept constant contact to ensure I was on track to achieve my best.
“I am pleased to return back to work on St Helena and feel I have developed both personally and professionally. I thank all those who supported me during my studies. I wouldn’t have achieved what I did without the support of my friends, family and colleagues. I hope that I can continue to help improve the standards and efficiency of Corporate IT.”
