DRAFT ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION ORDINANCE

PUBLIC MEETINGS

The public are reminded that the draft Environmental Protection Ordinance remains out for public consultation until Friday 9 October 2015.

The Ordinance deals with the protection of St Helena’s environment, including the conservation of biodiversity, control of pollution, waste and litter, consideration of environmental impacts in decision-making and environmental monitoring.

Deputy Director of Environment & Natural Resources, Derek Henry, said:

The Ordinance will enable us to make strong provisions for the protection of our environment.  It will help us in our work in looking after our unique species and very special flora and fauna.  Measures will also be put in place to control pollution, hazardous substances, litter and waste.

“In doing this, we will contribute to one of St Helena’s three National Goals – Effective Management of the Environment. As we move towards developing a green tourism based economy to help secure the Island’s future, this ordinance will give us the tools to ensure that the vision of sustainable economic growth that benefits everyone is achieved.”

To assist with interpreting and understanding the Ordinance, a Plain English guide has been produced and copies of this and the draft Ordinance itself have been placed in the Public Library, Customer Services Centre, Essex House and ENRD’s Scotland Office. Personal copies are available on request. Both the Environmental Protection Ordinance and the plain English guide can also be found at: https://www.sainthelena.gov.sh/publications/.

With the public consultation drawing to a close this week, the final public meeting will be held at 7pm this evening at Half Tree Hollow Community Centre, and one-to-one sessions at Essex House are available tomorrow, Wednesday 7 October, from 2pm to 5pm.
