Position: GIS Topographical Surveyor
Length of Service: One year and eight months
Positives of the role:
“GIS has given me the ability to be more responsible and independent; by having the responsibility of leading surveys, making decisions and using different techniques of surveying to make the job easier and efficient.
GIS has many learning opportunities where we use different software like ARC GIS, QGIS, Python and AutoCAD.
I have learnt different techniques of surveying, from GPS to Total Station.
Working at various locations around the Island makes the job enjoyable, seeing places that many people on St Helena have never seen or visited before.
I enjoy the fact that GIS aids the development of the Island by informed decision making as a result of our surveying and GIS analysis.
Meeting new people makes the job interesting, especially when I learn about the history of St Helena and how customers acquired their land.
Helping a customer with surveying or creating a map of their boundary makes the job great, knowing that a customer leaves the office or a survey feeling thankful for our services.”
Ambitions with the job role
“To take advantage of all the opportunities GIS can provide and learn as much about the different software and surveying techniques we use.
I would like to try my best in helping the development of the GIS Section and other sections so that we can move forward in development of the Island.”
