Police Sergeant - Ascension Island

£23,968 per annum (total package value up to £41,266)
A unique and challenging opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and dynamic individual, to join the Royal St. Helena Police Service (RSHP) on Ascension Island. The Royal St. Helena Police Service covers both Ascension Island and St. Helena and, at full strength, consists of 34 officers.

We are seeking to recruit an experienced UK Police Sergeant to serve on Ascension Island on a contractual basis for a period of two years in the first instance. The successful candidate will lead a small detachment of officers responsible for policing and immigration needs of this small British Overseas Territory.

In line with the requirements of the Police Service Ordinance 1985, the post holder must be under the age of 60 on the date of appointment.



What you’ll do

The key duties and objectives of the post of Police Sergeant are as follows:

Responsible for the management of all aspects of day-to-day policing on the island of Ascension, including planning, management and command of Police Operations.

•Provide operational leadership and line management to the uniformed police officers.

•Community policing, working with key partners and stakeholders to maintain and enhance community engagement and neighbourhood policing.

•Investigation/Supervision of crime and other incidents.

•Perform role of Custody Sergeant

•Ensure public events are well planned, efficiently policed and reviewed and that relevant learning is recorded for future reference.

•Following the receipt of actionable intelligence, to instigate investigations into suspected offences.

•Promote both internally and externally the safeguarding agenda.

•Mentor officers and assist in the building of both capability and capacity across the Royal St. Helena Police Service.

•Assist in the management of operational resources in order to maximise efficiency ensuring best value at all times.

•Undertake training needs analysis and, with the Inspector (Training & Development), develop appropriate training plans to develop staff.

•To undertake the role of Licensing Officer and to supervise and advice the register of vehicle and post office staff, driver examiners and motor vehicle examiners

In the absence of the Inspector you may have to:

•Undertake the role of Emergency Planning Officer for Ascension Island.

•Undertake the role of Superintendent of Prisons in accordance with the Prisons (Ascension) Ordinance, 1960.

•Undertake the role of Chief Immigration Officer, working together with the Administrator of Ascension Island in relation to Entry Control.

You will help to develop, shape and influence the development of policing on Ascension Island in order to deliver RSHP and AIG strategic objectives and ensure consistency of approach, delivery and enforcement. More information is contained in the job description.
