Probation Service

The Probation Service supervises offenders in the community, supports rehabilitation, and works with partner agencies to reduce reoffending and protect the public.

The service works closely with the Courts, Prison Service, Police, Social Care, and other agencies to support safer communities across St. Helena. It is represented on the island’s Safeguarding Board and delivers training to stakeholders and partner agencies upon request.

Court Services

The Probation Service supports both the Magistrates’ Court and the Supreme Court as required, by preparing pre-sentence reports (PSRs) to assist Magistrates and Judges in determining the most appropriate sentence and support arrangements for offenders appearing before the Court.

Probation Orders

Probation Orders can be imposed for periods ranging from 12 months to three years.

During this time, Probation Officers work with offenders to:

  • address offending behaviour
  • reduce the risk of reoffending
  • support rehabilitation
  • encourage positive lifestyle changes

Community Service Orders

Community Service Orders provide an alternative to custody and may be imposed by the Court.

Community service work supports non-profit organisations and community groups, including:

  • charities
  • community centres
  • churches

Custody and Post-Release Supervision

Probation Officers deliver one-to-one offending behaviour work with prisoners and contribute to group work programmes within the prison.
