ST HELENA RED CROSS RE-LAUNCHED

The St Helena Branch of the British Red Cross (BRC) was re-launched on Tuesday evening, 25 April 2017, at a reception held at the Governor’s residence, Plantation House.

Kevin Studds from the BRC, who was scheduled to visit the Island to meet with volunteers to increase the understanding of the BRC and discuss the role of the St Helena Branch as well as re-launch the Branch publicly, was unfortunately not able to be on-Island for the re-launch but was able to link up with the reception via Skype.

All of the Overseas Territories have branches of the BRC. St Helena originally had a Branch which ended in the early 1970s though the BRC had never completely disbanded it.

The idea to re-launch the St Helena Red Cross was highlighted in a Disaster Management Audit in 2009. It was recognised that St Helena would benefit from a volunteer organisation that will be of assistance in times of major incidents.

The reestablishment of the branch was led by Councillors Pamela Ward-Pearce and Christine Scipio-O’Dean, Nicholas Yon, and Emergency Planning Manager, Ian Johnson.

Acting Governor, Judi Leon, said:

“I would like to thank the small team for their commitment to promoting and recruiting volunteers to the St Helena Branch, ensuring that the BRC is once again active on the Island.”

So far, over 30 people have signed up to be members.
