NEW CHIEF MAGISTRATE APPOINTED

 

Nicholas Aldridge has been appointed the new Chief Magistrate of St Helena, following the departure of John MacRitchie in February 2017. He has been appointed on a three year contract and his main duty will be to sit in on any Magistrate Court proceedings either alone or with Justices of the Peace (JPs).

As the Chief Magistrate, Nick will train and mentor on a rolling basis both the JPs and the Officers who administer the Court system. He will also become the Chief Coroner on St Helena responsible for mentoring and training the qualified and lay Coroners and to ensure the smooth operation of the new Coroners & Presumption of Death Ordinance, 2015. Nick undertook Coroner training with the Judicial College in the UK last year.

The Chief Magistrate also carries out the role of Registrar of Lands and will train and mentor the public servants who are engaged in managing the Registry. Other roles include being the Labour Regulating Authority under recently-enacted Employment Rights legislation, President of the Land Development Appeals Tribunal, President of the Media Commission and Trustee of the Legal Assistance Fund.

The Chief Magistrate also chairs the Immigration Appeal Court and the Mental Health Tribunal along with being the Commissioner for Workmen’s Compensation and supervising the Registrar of Companies. Part of Nick’s role will also be as the Magistrate and Chief Coroner of Ascension Island.

Nick is a familiar face to St Helena as the previous Public Solicitor. He will take up his new appointment when he returns to the Island.    

Nick is a Lawyer of considerable experience having qualified some 18 years ago. His main body of experience relates to Criminal Law and as such is an accomplished Solicitor. He also has many years’ experience of dealing with Land Law and Conveyancing, civil matters, Employment Law, Immigration Law and family matters.
