Preparation is underway to update the Register of Electors for St Helena. Whilst this is an annual process, members of the public are reminded that this year’s Register will be used for the General Election that will take place in July 2017.

Eligible persons are therefore encouraged to make application to add their names or amend any details in the current Register, dated 1 July 2016.

Currently, persons eligible to be registered must:

There are some exceptions, such as mental incapacity or if someone is serving a prison sentence of 12 months or more.

The Provisional Register of Electors will be issued on Monday, 8 May 2017. This will be followed by a 14 day period during which applications can be made to make final amendments to the Register before it is published to come into effect on 1 July 2017.

The public is advised that a Bill will go to formal Legislative Council in May to amend the Elections legislation to allow 17 year olds to add their names to the Register thus enabling them to vote in the General Election. Further publicity will be given nearer the time.

In the meantime, applications to amend the current Register must be submitted to the Registration Officer, Gillian Francis, by no later than 4pm on Wednesday, 26 April 2017 to enable the Provisional Register to be published on 8 May 2017.

Copies are also held by Assistant Registration Officers and the Administrator’s Office on Ascension Island.

Remember, if your name is not on the Register of Electors you will not be able to stand or vote in the upcoming General Election.

The public is advised that the road at Toby’s Ledge, Blue Hill, will be closed on Thursday, 30 March 2017, from 9am until 12 noon.

This is to allow the Forestry Section of the Agriculture & Natural Resources Division to carry out the safe felling of two trees in this area.

As usual, only Emergency Services will be granted access during this time.

The Forestry Section would like to thank the public in advance for their cooperation. Any inconvenience caused is very much regretted.

A male person has been charged in connection with the theft of a large number of flagstones from the ‘Sand Store’ at the Wharf.

St Helena Police are still seeking further witnesses and information at this time.

In January of this year, St Helena Police appealed to the public for information regarding the theft of these heritage flagstones belonging to Solomon & Company (St Helena) Plc.

These stones are considered to be St Helena heritage, and were the original flooring from the Malabar building. They are part of the Island’s history and are highly valued by Solomon & Company (St Helena) Plc and the Island as a whole.

The public is advised that due to the need for rehabilitation works, the Roads Section will be closing the road from Head O’Wain to the Saddle at Horse Pasture between 9am and 3pm on Wednesday, 5 April 2017.

No unauthorised vehicles will be allowed to travel on this road during the closure but, as usual, Emergency Services will be granted access.

Persons requiring materials from Nigel George’s Quarry at Horse Pasture are asked to make collection before this scheduled closure.

A Multi-agency Major Incident Exercise is planned to take place on Wednesday, 12 April 2017. This Exercise is necessary to test the Island’s response to an emergency incident. It will also test how the General Hospital is able to deal with a large number of casualties.

The Exercise is due to start in the morning and will last for most of the day. Normal business should not be affected.

Volunteers are required to play a variety of roles in the Exercise. Persons wishing to volunteer are advised to contact the Emergency Planning Department on tel: 25052, or email either:

The Health Directorate would also like to advise the public that all non-emergency services will be suspended on this day. This includes:

The switchboard at the General Hospital will not be accepting any incoming calls and all emergencies will need to be directed through 911.

 All medical emergency requirements must be presented to the General Hospital reception, where patients will be triaged by a nurse. Further medical treatment will be arranged if appropriate.

The General Hospital will not be open to members of the public. Visiting times for inpatients during this day will be suspended until 5pm.

The Health Directorate apologises for any inconvenience.

APRIL 2017

As part of their Neighbourhood Policing Programme, St Helena Police Officers will continue their ‘beat surgeries’ in various places around the Island throughout April 2017.

These surgeries are designed to take place in busy areas where it is easier for more people to attend (see dates & times below).

A questionnaire will also be available so people can tell the Police what concerns them most in their area. This will help the Police identify patterns which will then help them to develop a problem solving plan.

Further to Friday’s press release on the RMS St Helena making good progress to Cape Town, the public is advised that unfortunately due to weather conditions the vessel was not able to make the speeds predicted over the weekend. This means that the RMS will now arrive at Cape Town in the early hours of Tuesday morning, 28 March 2017, and not early evening today as previously announced.

The Captain has advised passengers that those who have made accommodation bookings in Cape Town for tonight will be provided with a letter stating the reason they have been unable to honour this booking.
