In 2016, Waste Management Services (WMS), in partnership with Chris Bargo from CNSKB Trading, commenced glass waste recycling operations at Horse Point Landfill Site (HPLS).

Working in collaboration with CNSKB Trading, who voluntarily undertakes glass waste recycling, has proven to be successful, and environmentally beneficial. The reduction of glass waste volume to landfill has been evident across waste composition analysis calculations – the ‘waste wheel’ – with 18.84% in 2016, down to 9.17% in 2017.

WMS has supported CNSKB Trading with:

Environmental Risk Manager, Mike Durnford, said:

“The glass waste recycling partnership between Waste Management Services and CNSKB is a demonstration of how working in collaboration towards a shared goal can be so rewarding. The reduction of glass waste to landfill is not just environmentally beneficial but also contributes towards extending the design life of the Horse Point Landfill Site.

“I am grateful to the public for recycling their glass waste and would encourage everyone to continue to play their part, recycling glass wherever possible, in order to improve further on the impressive waste wheel figures.”

Correct use of the glass waste recycling bins is important to achieve a higher quality glass waste product for reuse. Glass waste recycling bins that are contaminated with non-glass waste e.g. food containers, cans and other street litter, creates an additional step in the recycling process, as these wastes need to be removed before crushing, which is both costly and avoidable.

Adopting more of a recycling culture now, will make the transition to commercial recycling of wastes easier in the future.

WMS are committed to their mission statement – ‘Working in partnership with customers for a cleaner and greener St Helena’ – and would welcome the opportunity to work with other private sector partners in order to introduce more Reduce, Reuse or Recycle initiatives. Should you wish to discuss an opportunity, please contact Mike Durnford on tel: 24724 or via e-mail: mike-durnford@enrd.gov.sh

Attached are some photos of the different types of bins for glass waste situated around the Island.

‘YOU SAID, WE DID’

St Helena Police have been consulting with communities across the Island as part of their Neighbourhood Policing programme. A series of meetings and surgeries were well attended, and a range of subjects discussed.

Concerns raised in various districts include:

New Ground

Concerns were raised about the Government Garage staff at Donkey Plain testing the brakes on their vehicles on the road from New Ground Point to the Government Garage. This practice is seen as being dangerous and raised concerns for Public Safety

Officers have spoken to the Manager of the Transport Division who responded by informing officers that Government vehicles will now be tested in the lower area of New Ground which should alleviate any further public concerns.

Half Tree Hollow (HTH)

Police were asked to look at the possibility of having a Lollipop Lady present near the bus shelter at the Half Tree Hollow Clinic during times when the school bus picks up and drops off children. Members of the public and parents were concerned with the children’s safety

Over the past two weeks, officers have been present during peak hours at both the HTH Community Centre and near HTH Clinic. Photographs and Body Worn Imagery have been documented and will be compiled and delivered to the Education Directorate within the coming week.  Road Safety Crossing talks will be conducted in Schools in the coming months to help educate children on road safety.

White Gate

There were concerns about vehicles being used on the roads while emitting excessive smoke from exhaust pipes

The Police and Vehicle Inspector have started carrying out vehicle stop checks around the Island. Vehicles will be stopped and checked to ensure the law is being complied with.

Longwood

Residents have requested a disabled park near the supermarket

Officers have spoken to the Roads Section and will arrange for this to be brought to the next meeting of the Highways Authority.

Jamestown

There were concerns about traffic congestion in the area of the ‘Brow’ where certain drivers are expecting oncoming vehicles to reverse out into the main road. This is a safety concern and is only being experienced with certain drivers

Officers are currently looking at this and are in the process of trying to identify the drivers concerned. They are also looking to have a meeting with the Roads Manager to discuss a way forward.

In Barracks Square there are concerns about smoke being emitted into houses when vehicles are parking in front of them, thus causing a health issue

This area has been visited to establish if this is a problem and Police are also in the process of meeting with the Roads Section to discuss what can be done to alleviate this.

The keys to the disabled toilets near the Museum are kept at Police Head Quarters which causes an inconvenience when people wish to use the facility during the time the Police Office is closed

It is understood that the key at the Police Office is for emergency purposes only. Officers spoke to Mr Ian Rummery who advised that keys are available from Mrs Anna Crowie and people who are registered as disabled can be issued one free of charge.

Chris Dawson from Longwood, St Helena (see photo attached), has been awarded a prestigious Foreign & Commonwealth Office Chevening Scholarship and will undertake a year-long Masters Degree in Civil Engineering at Liverpool John Moores University from September 2017.

Chris said:

“I decided to apply for Chevening as it will give me the opportunity to increase my technical and management skills in the subject and bring me one step closer to becoming a Chartered Engineer. It will also enable me to further contribute to the development of infrastructure on St Helena.

“I feel elated to have been awarded the Chevening Scholarship and I’m looking forward to joining the prestigious Chevening network and alumni and representing St Helena.”

Governor Lisa Phillips added:

“I have met many people who were lucky enough to be awarded a Chevening Scholarship at some point in their career. Chevening Scholarships are highly prized and prestigious awards. Typically, these people go on to be leaders in their community.  I am sure that Chris will be no different and will no doubt be a huge asset to St Helena’s future. Congratulations to him!”

Chris is currently in the UK completing a contract with an engineering consultancy, but will be ready to start his Masters’ studies in September.

Chris graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering in 2014 and returned to St Helena to work for Connect Saint Helena Ltd as a Graduate Engineer for approximately two years. In 2016, he decided to pursue employment overseas to further develop as a Civil Engineer with the intention to return to St Helena in the future. In the UK, Chris has been working for a consultancy providing civil and structural engineering design solutions to private sector clients.

Congratulations are extended to Chris from all on St Helena.

Kyle Williamson from Pennsylvania, USA, is currently on-Island taking photos of St Helena for the Google Street View Mapping Programme.

Google Street View is part of the larger Google Maps and Earth applications. Street View utilises camera equipment mounted to cars, bicycles, backpacks, boats and so on to obtain panoramic 360° images. These images provide a view to someone using the programme online, as if they were standing in the selected location and allow the viewer to look around within the image in all directions.

 Kyle said:

“My hope is that providing Google Street View images to the world will help promote awareness and appreciation of St Helena by giving access, visually, to the unique culture, environment and architecture. The photos will enhance the Island’s presence on Google, and give people – who may like to visit and people who may never have the opportunity to visit – the chance to view and learn more about the Island.”

Kyle’s original intent is to photograph the road network on the Island utilising a camera mounted to a car. Upon completion of this, he plans to carry the camera to easily accessible historic, environmental, and scenic sights on the Island. Finally he hopes to photograph the Post Box Walks as an opportunity to share the wide variety of landscapes, natural and man-made heritage of St Helena.

Kyle is using a Samsung Gear360 camera provided by Google through their loan programme. While driving or walking, Kyle can take one image every eight seconds – these images are GPS tagged to the location where they have been taken. Kyle then processes all of the images on his iPhone before uploading them to Google.

Images of Sandy Bay Beach and High Knoll Fort can now be found on Google Street View.

Due to the large scale of this project, SURE and St Helena Tourism are working together to provide an internet solution to assist Kyle as much as possible whilst he is on-island. Kyle plans to continue this project when he gets back to the US where he will then also edit and link images together which will allow viewers to ‘drive’ along the roads of St Helena on their computer.

Kyle concluded:

“Panoramic/360° images are tremendous tools for providing interactive imagery for educational, historical and tourism websites as well as promoting businesses. I would be interested in continuing work on St Helena to promote the Island through more photography of this sort.

“Areas that I was unable to cover – because of time or technical difficulties – could be covered in the future. Interiors of historical locations could be documented for posterity and interest to the world at large. Additionally, historic sites and local businesses could use this form of photography to create virtual tours of their facilities, locations, or to show potential visitors rental locations.”

Kyle is carrying out the project while holidaying with his family on St Helena. Kyle has been here twice before and first visited the Island in 2008 when he worked on the St Helena Images Project for the museum. Kyle and his family will leave the Island on Monday, 7 August 2017.

Two photos of St Helena on Google Street View are attached to this press release.

12 July 2017

Over the last three weeks, 12 members of staff from across St Helena Government have been participating in a challenging but productive training course with trainer, Sascha Kiess, from the UK Institute for Continuous Improvement in Public Services (ICiPS).

The training course has been tailored to support SHG in delivering the Prospectus for Change and achieving its goal of making the organisation a better place to work and serve the people of St Helena, while also recognising that improvement is everyone’s responsibility.

Staff participating in the training will now take forward what they have learnt, in their areas.

In addition to the full training, 68 SHG staff and 17 employees from Non Government organisations including the Bank of St Helena, St Helena National Trust and SHAPE,  were able to take part in half-day training sessions which focussed on how we can improve the way we work.

Training participant, Police Inspector Jonathan Thomas, commented:

“It has been an intensive but enjoyable three weeks attending the training with Sascha. For me personally it was great to have participated and bonded with employees from different SHG Directorates and partnering agencies.

“The course has given us techniques and tools to assist in identifying and implementing the need to continuously improve and to demonstrate the benefits.  It is now up to us to take what we have learnt and put into practice. I look forward to working with my fellow students and striving to deliver a better service to the community.”

Sascha said:

“I really enjoyed delivering the training to the SHG staff. They were very open-minded, they worked hard, and I know they will be extremely helpful in supporting their colleagues to fix some of their day-to-day problems.”

Chief Secretary (Designate) Susan O’Bey concluded:

The feedback from people who attended the training sessions has been extremely positive and already staff are coming up with ideas which they want to implement in their work areas. This is all about problem solving and making small improvements which in turn have a positive impact on the way we work and provide services.

APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN

Applications for the Queen’s Young Leaders Programme are now open until Monday, 21 August 2017.

Established by the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust, in partnership with Comic Relief and the Royal Commonwealth Society, the Queen’s Young Leaders Programme is now in its third year and aims to discover, celebrate and support exceptional young people aged 18-29 from across the Commonwealth, leaving a lasting legacy for Her Majesty The Queen.

Young people nominated for an Award should be taking the lead in their community and using their skills to transform their own lives and the futures of others around them. Winners of this prestigious Award will receive a unique package of training, mentoring and networking, including a one-week residential programme in the UK during which they will collect their Award from Her Majesty The Queen. With this support, Award winners will be expected to continue and develop the amazing work they are already doing in their communities.

Each application/nomination must meet the following criteria:

Priority will be given to individuals who have overcome challenges to achieve their goals.

Governor Lisa Phillips said:

“This is a great opportunity for our budding young leaders to get some extra support through a year-long tailored programme.  Everyone knows a young person who would benefit from such a prestigious award – someone who is already showing commitment to the community and who is already demonstrating leadership skills.  Make someone’s day by suggesting they apply.”

All applications/nominations will be considered based on the young person’s achievements to date as well as their potential and their future ambition. Award winners will be shortlisted by a panel made up of young people from across the commonwealth. The shortlist will then be presented to the Queen’s Young Leaders Programme Board, which contains members from all three partner organisations, for final selection and decision.
