The St Helena Fisheries Corporation (SHFC), working with South African Company, Green Fish, exported the first sample of fresh tuna from St Helena on Saturday, 20 January 2018 – a first in the Island’s history.

Green Fish, a family run business that services the South African restaurant, hospitality and wholesale seafood industry with high quality, seasonal and locally sourced seafood products, has been conversing with St Helena Fisheries for the past 6-8 months.

Ryan Nienaber from Green Fish visited the Island to meet with the St Helena Fisheries and fishermen. Whilst on-Island, Ryan undertook a basic tuna grading workshop with the fishermen and Coldstore staff and guided the packing of the first sample box of tuna. When the fish arrived in Cape Town, Ryan undertook a re-grading and distribution showcasing St Helena Tuna at Green Fish.

Ryan said:

“I would like to extend huge congratulations to St Helena for their first ever fresh tuna export. We have a few tiny bumps to iron out, but I have been in contact with St Helena Fisheries on how best we can achieve this. Our next step is another sample box to get a flawless run.”

General Manager of SHFC, Elizabeth Clingham, said:

“This was a baby step (although it feels huge!) in creating better economic prosperity for the fishing industry. This trial was conducted for us to test the system, understand the logistics and troubleshoot any issues that might arise. Thankfully, all of our planning has paid off as overall this was a successful operation!  I’d like to extend thanks especially to Mr Ryan Nienaber of Green Fish for his passion and pro-activeness.  Ryan took the time, all on his own volition, to come to St Helena to understand our Island and give advice and support to our industry stakeholders on quality management to attain maximum benefit in this new area of export.

“I’d also like to make special mention to Miss Terri Clingham, SHFC Operations Manager, for organising, ensuring all of the necessary paperwork was in order and planning this. There are still a few more ‘baby steps’ that must be taken before this becomes a regular thing. Watch this space everyone, we’ll being giving further updates as this exercise progresses.”

The Health Directorate wishes to advise the public that there is currently chicken pox on the Island and a human viral infection going around, with symptoms including diarrhoea, vomiting, high temperatures, dry cough and body aches.

Please be advised that these conditions, in the majority, are self-limiting and can be managed at home with rest, regular fluids and painkillers e.g. paracetamol (available in most local shops).

But the viruses are contagious and the Health Directorate would like to ask those with any of the viruses to avoid attending the Hospital where possible. Patients at risk include young children and the elderly.

If symptoms are not improving after 72 hours please do seek medical advice.

If parents are concerned about the health of their children they should contact the Hospital or Pharmacist on 22500 to seek further advice.

Parents of children with any of the viruses are advised that you will not be required to produce a green medical certificate for any school absence on this occasion.

SERVING THE ISLAND FOR 27 YEARS

The RMS St Helena, one of only two ocean-going vessels in the world still to carry the title of Royal Mail Ship, will depart on her final voyage from St Helena Island on Saturday, 10 February 2018.

The RMS, as she is affectionately known, has served the Island since 1990 and will have completed 268 voyages by the time she is decommissioned. In addition to carrying passengers in well-fed comfort, the ‘working ship’ has been a lifeline to St Helena carrying all the Island’s goods and supplies.

Passengers who have travelled on the RMS on her regular voyages to St Helena, Ascension Island and Cape Town and during her voyages to the UK and Tristan da Cunha will have their own special memories of the ship. She has happily carried new born babies, sadly brought home people to be laid to rest, brought home returning Saints after spending years abroad and brought first time visitors to the Island.

History

In 1986, Her Majesty’s Government (HMG) agreed to a new purpose built ship to serve St Helena. The design contract was awarded to Three Quays Marine Services with HMG signing a contract to build the ship with Hall Russell. Hall Russell went into administration and the contract was taken over by A & P Appledore.

The RMS was launched by HRH Prince Andrew in Aberdeen on 31 October 1989 and came into service in November 1990 when she departed from Cardiff on her maiden voyage.

While two other ships still carry the legacy ‘Royal Mail’ designation, the RMS is the only remaining Royal Mail Ship contracted by Royal Mail to carry mail across the seas.

Capacity and Facilities

British registered and 6,767 gross tonnes, the RMS originally had capacity to carry 126 passengers which was increased to 156 in 2012.  The ship can carry up to 92 standard twenty foot containers, including 17 reefers.

The RMS has modern facilities, stabilisers, air conditioning, fax, telephone and email. She carries a doctor and has well equipped medical facilities.

Did you know?

During the RMS’ 27 years of service, her passengers and crew have consumed a whopping:

Passengers and crew have drunk some 643,200 cans of beer, which is equivalent to 212,256 litres and gulped a thirst quenching 1,232,800 litres of bottled water.

They’ve also used 1,744,412 individual paper table napkins and 497,409 individual paper draw liners, enough to cover the entire Francis Plain sports field on St Helena.

The ship has also used a staggering 6,421 Nautical Miles of baby quality toilet paper, more than long enough to reach the UK from Cape Town via St Helena and Ascension Island!

RMS Farewell

Preparations for the RMS Farewell celebrations on St Helena are ongoing. Keep an eye on local newspapers and tune in to the radio stations for updates on the programme.

As part of the farewell celebrations for the RMS St Helena, an ecumenical service of Thanksgiving will be held at St James’ Church on Tuesday, 6 February 2018, starting at 7pm. The service will also be broadcast live via SAMS Radio 1.

At 6.20pm there will be a Church Parade from the Canister to St James’ Church by the Scouts, Cubs, Beavers, Girl Guides, Brownies, Rainbows and Pathfinders. Current RMS Crew will join the procession at St James’ Church.

The service will provide the RMS crew with the opportunity of reflection. Also during the service, a bible, which was given to the first RMS at Christmas in 1978 by St Paul’s Cathedral, will be presented to the Bishop of St Helena to return to the Cathedral.

Following the service, attendees will proceed to the seafront. A hymn will be sung during the procession to the Cenotaph where the Ship’s choir will sing a hymn and a poem will be read before the Blessing by Bishop Richard Fenwick.

 All are invited to attend.

A School Warden Crossing of criss-crossed yellow lines has been painted on the road adjacent to the main gate of Pilling Primary School, Jamestown, to improve the safety of pedestrians in this area.

A School Warden Crossing is not a general pedestrian crossing as it is only in operation for short time periods – specifically when a School Warden (‘Lollipop’ person) is present and showing the ‘Lollipop sign’ to stop. Drivers are not allowed to cross or park inside the yellow demarcated area during this time.

The visiting Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Resource Team departed St Helena on Saturday, 27 January 2018, after delivering a Post-Election Seminar to St Helena’s Legislative Council.

The Seminar incorporated 14 different sessions, covering a range of topics including, ‘The Evolution of Parliamentary Democracy and the Constitution of St Helena’, ‘Public Speaking – Enabling Parliamentarians to Communicate Clearly and with Impact’, ‘Practice and Procedure in the House’ and ‘Ethics and Accountability of Members of Parliament’.

The CPA Post-Election Seminar provided Members of Legislative Council with the opportunity to ask questions about parliamentary practice and procedure, resulting in a better understanding of the parliamentary system and democratic processes in other Commonwealth jurisdictions.

Councillor Derek Thomas said:

“I think that the CPA’s visit was very successful indeed. After wrapping up the final session on Friday, Members commented on how successful the Seminar was. It will certainly be of benefit to all Councillors in terms of their development, but also to the Secretariat who will also have learnt a lot. So, in all, it’s been very good, very successful, I can see that it will empower Councillors a lot more and we look forward to taking advantage of future opportunities to develop our Council.”

The CPA is the only Commonwealth body that works to strengthen territorial assemblies and legislatures. The relationship between St Helena and the CPA is key in providing a platform to develop good parliamentary practice within the self-governing UK Overseas Territories and to share good practice with other similar legislatures across the Commonwealth.

Following the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Post-Election Seminar and before their departure on Saturday, 27 January 2018, two members of the visiting CPA Resource Team – Ms Meenakshi Dhar, Acting Head of the CPA’s Private Office, and Hon Barry House, former President of the Legislative Council of Western Australia – launched the CPA Roadshow for Young People at Prince Andrew School on Friday, 26 January.

The first session of the CPA Roadshow, supported by Councillor Christine Scipio-O’Dean, was held for the upper-age students of the Island’s three Primary Schools. Students were given an introduction to the CPA and the work that they do, and learnt more about the Commonwealth as a whole.

The second session was held with the whole of Prince Andrew School and was a more in-depth session giving students the opportunity to discuss the importance of the Commonwealth and of parliamentary democracy with the visiting CPA delegation. Councillors Derek Thomas and Cruyff Buckley assisted with the presentations.

Hon Barry House said:

“The youth of course is our future and the Commonwealth, as a unique worldwide family organisation, contains 60% of its population under the age of 30. This means the youth does and will play an increasingly important role in the future of the Commonwealth, which in turn represents one third of the world’s people.”

The CPA Roadshows are a tour of Commonwealth schools and universities. The CPA Roadshows will provide an opportunity for young people to learn about the political values of the Commonwealth such as diversity, development and parliamentary democracy; to discuss issues of concern about the society in which they live; and to find out about the work of the CPA.
