CONSUMPTION MUST DECREASE
The Island is currently experiencing hot sunny weather conditions with little to no rainfall resulting in a lack of surface flow. The majority of the Island’s water stocks are being retrieved from boreholes.
Consumption remains a big issue with rates rising above the 1000 cubic metre mark for the majority of days during the past week.
If daily consumption rates of above 1000 cubic metres continue and the stored water volume subsequently continues to decrease, further Island-wide water restrictions will be imposed.
Connect Saint Helena (CSH) are continuing to pump water from boreholes into Red Hill via Chubb’s Spring and Hutt’s Gate and this is currently representing over 50% of the stored water stocks. If for any reason pumping was unable to continue, and consumption levels remain above the needed target, the Island would very quickly run out of stored water.
This is further hampered by St Helena’s current weather with more sunny days forecast and the possibility of only light isolated showers – insufficient to replenish water stocks.
With warm weather patterns and no significant rainfall forecast, it is therefore very important that we keep our water consumption to essential use only.
The public is reminded that we are currently under an Island-wide hosepipe ban. If you see anyone using water irresponsibly or notice a burst pipe or leak, then please inform CSH immediately.
