The Safe Haven is today, Monday 18 September 2017, launching a Domestic Abuse Emotional Support & Counselling Helpline Service. This service will provide an avenue for individuals who wish to talk about personal incidences of domestic abuse they are suffering, or for people who wish to refer someone they know is being abused by a partner or individual within a household.
The helpline will be open for both male and female callers from 8.30am to 9pm. From 9pm to 8.30am there will be an answering machine in place where individuals will be asked to leave their name and a number – they will be contacted within 24 hours of the phone call being received.
However, it is vital that the Police be the first point of contact in an emergency, they can be contacted on the telephone number 999.
As a team, Safe Haven staff value confidentiality, and privacy will be maintained if it is in the best interest of the client and there are no further risks and concerns raised from information received. With all support services provided, the client’s safety and protection is in staff’s best interest.
Safe Haven support staff have been trained to offer emotional support to those who access the helpline service. If the caller is willing to receive help, then staff will do their best to help them be safe and feel safe. A variety of programmes provided by the Safe Haven can also be offered to clients, to help them cope and assist them to move forward to healing, and gaining healthy relationships.
We all have the responsibility not to be silent about domestic abuse. Speak out if you or anyone you know is being controlled and coerced, hurt physically, verbally, financially or emotionally. Let us work together to end the violence or emotional stress within the home, and aim for healthy households and safe environments on St Helena.
