On the UN International Day of Disabled Persons (Wednesday 3 November 2014) – a day aimed at promoting an understanding of disability issues, support, rights and wellbeing – an Accessible Changing Room at the Swimming Pool was opened in Jamestown. Council members, pool staff and members of the public attended a short ceremony hosted by Councillor Ian Rummery (Chairperson of St Helena’s Disabled Persons Aid Society).
Ian commented:
“The Disabled Persons Aid Society exists to support individuals with small grants to purchase equipment or services, as well as campaigning to improve accessibility on the Island for people with a disability. Several years ago, the Society conducted an exercise where members tried to access buildings in Jamestown in a wheelchair. This taught us a lesson on how small things can cause big problems.
“Since then, the society has been working with SHG, contractors and other agencies to improve accessibility around St Helena. It is inevitably a gradual process, but today we celebrate a solid achievement.”
Ian ended by thanking everyone who helped in building and financing this facility, and praised the partnership and teamwork. Councillor Les Baldwin said a few words, followed by the opening of the facility by Kristian Johns (pictured with Ian Rummery).
