Zedella Young left St Helena in August 2012 to undertake the Joint Honours Degree of BSc (Hons) Human Geography and Journalism & Media Cultures at the University of Hertfordshire.

Zedella’s three year course saw her covering three subject areas in two different schools (Humanities and Life and Medical Science). In year one, Zedella covered Human Space and Society, Journalism Law and Ethics and an Introduction to Media Communications. In year two, she studied modules such as Understanding a Changing World, Print News, Features, Markets and Styles and Media in an International Context – and year three, Urban Space and Society, Online Journalism, Advertising and Digital Media.

Zedella said of her reasons behind choosing this degree:

“From a young age I have always enjoyed writing and when I attended Prince Andrew School, journalism writing was something I wanted to focus on.

“I was fortunate that Joint Honours Degrees had become very popular around the time I received my scholarship and that journalism was a part of that trend. I decided to link journalism with tourism, the latter being the field which I am in today.”

During her third year, Zedella travelled to Granada, Spain, visiting heritage sites, attending flamenco dancing displays and visiting coastal beaches, experiencing life as a tourist in a marginalised area.

Zedella added:

“University is not just about studying, socialising and gaining your independence – it is also a chance to meet new people, travel and experience what the world offers.

“There are different routes you can take on St Helena for University studies – I took the post-school scholarship route, for students coming out of PAS who are ready to take a leap into higher education. We are very lucky to have such an opportunity, and it is there for you to take full advantage of. All you need to do is take the leap and apply.”

Zedella thanks her friends including fellow students who supported her during her studies, her parents Lolly Young and Nick Thorpe, Mr Brian Frederick, St Helena UK Government Representative Kedell Worboys and her team in the UK, and the post-school scholarship committee for allowing her to embark on an “amazing” opportunity.

Zedella is now working with Enterprise St Helena as a Tourism Officer for St Helena Tourism.
