UK OCCUPATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY CENTRE SUPPORTS SHG

From the Occupational Psychology Centre (OPC) – an occupational psychology consultancy based in the UK – Laura Hedley  is currently on-Island supporting SHG on a number of projects.

Laura is providing particular support to SHG’s Future Leaders Programme, working with individuals on their development and meeting with the Core Leadership Group and Directors to gain a greater understanding of SHG and how the organisation works in order to provide effective support in the future.

Since arriving on 3 March, Laura has worked with the Future Leaders individually to consider their development, conducted various practical workshops with them about team work and leadership styles and facilitated a session with them and their mentors to help build these relationships. Laura has also assisted with assessments for recruitment, facilitated group sessions with members of Corporate HR and worked closely with the Chief Secretary (Designate) to reflect on what she has learnt while visiting and to plan the next stages of support that the OPC can offer to SHG to ensure this is effective.

Laura said:

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at SHG. My visit has been hugely beneficial to assist me in gaining a greater understanding of how the organisation works and how initiatives such as the Future Leaders Programme fit into the wider goals for St Helena Government.

“Thank you to everyone who gave up their time to meet with me or attend a group session. Particular thanks to the Future Leaders for all their hard work in relation to the programme both before and during my visit.”

The OPC has been working with SHG since the end of 2016 providing training to Corporate HR in using psychometric tests effectively in recruitment and development and then supporting with the design and implementation of the Future Leaders Programme.

Since the launch of the programme in November 2017, Laura has been working closely with the Future Leaders on a weekly basis, conducting practical workshops about a variety of topics to support their development. During this visit, Laura has conducted one-to-ones with each Future Leader and has been planning the next stages of the programme alongside the Chief Secretary (Designate), Susan O’Bey.

Susan said:

“Laura’s visit has been extremely helpful, having worked remotely for the last year, it has been useful for Laura to meet the Future Leaders and also to have in-depth discussions with Directors and other Senior Managers.”

Laura departs the Island on Saturday, 17 March, but will continue to support SHG with the next phase of the Future Leaders Programme, building on the work already completed and continuing to work with some of the individuals she has met during her visit on their personal development. Laura will also start work with SHG on some areas she has learnt about as a result of her visit.
