Teacher Trainees Awarded Certificate of Higher Education in Education Studies (Primary)

Teacher Trainees, Christy Bedwell and Robyn Yon-Bowers, have successfully completed the Certificate of Higher Education in Education Studies (Primary) accredited by the Open University.

Course Leader and Teacher Training Advisor, Garry Cameron, said:

“It was an absolute pleasure working and learning with Christy and Robyn. They worked very hard to assimilate and accommodate some complex concepts. The sociology assignments were particularly challenging but facilitated some excellent professional discussions along with a great deal of humour! Congratulations on achieving a distinction in the more difficult module. I am very proud of Christy and Robyn and wish them every success as they progress to the next accredited programme of study – Cambridge International Certificate in Teaching and Learning.”

The course involved studying child psychology and childhood studies which covered a range of educational theory, central to effective teaching and learning. The standard of the award is at first year university-level study and means that both Christy and Robyn have completed one year of a degree programme.

This course is usually a full time study programme carried out over nine months. The two trainees spent two days a week in school with a final two week placement.

Christy commented:

“The journey so far has been a memorable experience. I can say without a doubt that the module studies have further opened up my heart and mind about education and the importance of childhood. It feels amazing to have achieved at such a high standard, gaining a Certificate of Higher Education in Education Studies (Primary) accredited by the Open University. I am grateful to have been supported by Robyn who has encouraged and supported me along the way and also Garry Cameron who could not have been a better Teacher Training Advisor. I am now really eager to work towards the rest of my qualifications to become a St Helenian qualified teacher.”

Robyn said:

“I am over the moon with my results. It was not easy, but with the support of our Teacher Trainer it was a pleasant experience, with some laughs and also nearly some cries. This achievement has given me great motivation to continue my journey into becoming a locally qualified teacher on St Helena. I would like to say a huge Thank You to Garry Cameron for all that he has done, our results are a reflection of his determination for us. To Christy, Thank You for all of your support along the way – it was great having you alongside me. Lastly I want to thank all colleagues, family, and friends, who helped to make this journey a successful one.”
