ST HELENA’S FIRST FRESH TUNA EXPORT – A SUCCESS

The St Helena Fisheries Corporation (SHFC), working with South African Company, Green Fish, exported the first sample of fresh tuna from St Helena on Saturday, 20 January 2018 – a first in the Island’s history.

Green Fish, a family run business that services the South African restaurant, hospitality and wholesale seafood industry with high quality, seasonal and locally sourced seafood products, has been conversing with St Helena Fisheries for the past 6-8 months.

Ryan Nienaber from Green Fish visited the Island to meet with the St Helena Fisheries and fishermen. Whilst on-Island, Ryan undertook a basic tuna grading workshop with the fishermen and Coldstore staff and guided the packing of the first sample box of tuna. When the fish arrived in Cape Town, Ryan undertook a re-grading and distribution showcasing St Helena Tuna at Green Fish.

Ryan said:

“I would like to extend huge congratulations to St Helena for their first ever fresh tuna export. We have a few tiny bumps to iron out, but I have been in contact with St Helena Fisheries on how best we can achieve this. Our next step is another sample box to get a flawless run.”

General Manager of SHFC, Elizabeth Clingham, said:

“This was a baby step (although it feels huge!) in creating better economic prosperity for the fishing industry. This trial was conducted for us to test the system, understand the logistics and troubleshoot any issues that might arise. Thankfully, all of our planning has paid off as overall this was a successful operation!  I’d like to extend thanks especially to Mr Ryan Nienaber of Green Fish for his passion and pro-activeness.  Ryan took the time, all on his own volition, to come to St Helena to understand our Island and give advice and support to our industry stakeholders on quality management to attain maximum benefit in this new area of export.

“I’d also like to make special mention to Miss Terri Clingham, SHFC Operations Manager, for organising, ensuring all of the necessary paperwork was in order and planning this. There are still a few more ‘baby steps’ that must be taken before this becomes a regular thing. Watch this space everyone, we’ll being giving further updates as this exercise progresses.”
